Fleet Mechanic 2

The City of Kent is currently accepting applications for the position of Fleet Mechanic 2 in our Public Works Department. The incumbent in this position is responsible for performing skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work required to maintain the City’s fleet of vehicles, mowers and heavy construction equipment. The ideal candidate will have at least three (3) years of experience as a journey-level mechanic. It is critical that the person in this position has the ability to communicate well and can work collaboratively with others to maintain and repair a fleet of automobiles used by City of Kent employees.  If you have the skills and experience necessary to successfully perform vehicle inspections, maintenance and repair, this position may be perfect for you.

There is one (1) full-time, benefited position that will be filled by this recruitment process, and it is represented by the Teamsters union.

SALARY:

$7,057.00- $8,595.00 per month, depending on qualifications

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under the direction of the Fleet Superintendent, and supervision of the Fleet Supervisor, incumbent performs skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work required to maintain the City’s fleet of vehicles, mowers and heavy construction equipment.

Work is characterized by a substantial volume of skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of all City motorized equipment including specialized machines; using electronic testing equipment, and hand and power tools as required.

Work is performed with considerable independence in accordance with specific instructions and defined procedures and schedules. Supervisor defines objectives, priorities, and deadlines; and assists employee with unusual situations, which do not have clear objectives or precedents. Employee plans and carries out assignments and handles problems and deviations in accordance with instructions, policies, procedures and/or accepted practices. Work is evaluated for technical soundness and conformity to practice and policy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform journey level maintenance and mechanical repair of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, tractors, mowers and all other types of City power driven equipment in accordance with standard and OEM repair and maintenance procedures.

Operate both light and heavy equipment during pick-up and delivery and road testing of equipment.

Inspect vehicle/equipment for repair, diagnose problem and specify repair and parts required.

Perform job site repairs on equipment and vehicles as needed.

Inspect driver’s report of equipment malfunctions or deficiencies and determine necessary repairs, which are made in accordance with the latest standards and techniques.

Test and inspect completed work in order to ensure proper performance.

Maintain records and complete repair reports.  Record accurate readings from fuel pumps on a rotating schedule.  Complete all reports and paperwork on a timely basis.

Consult with Senior Mechanic for scheduling of work assigned on a regular basis.

Participate in the Division’s job safety program.

Communicate with and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, subordinates, clients, contractors, and other city employees.

Clean and maintain the repair shop by cleaning tools, equipment, floors and work benches.

Weld and fabricate parts as needed.

Installation and maintenance of emergency and response vehicle electronics, including but not limited to: strobe lights, light bars, lighted signs, radios, modems, computer systems, printers, inverters, theft lock out systems, and antennas.

Wiring harness set up, install fuses, relays, switches, and panels.

Programming, updating, and troubleshooting radios, other emergency systems, and Automated Vehicle Locator systems with existing software and coding.

Maintain records of installations.

Actively support the vision, mission, values and goals of the department and the City.

• Standard practices and techniques for maintenance and repair of a large centralized fleet of automobiles, light and heavy trucks including all types of grounds maintenance and construction equipment

• Principles of hybrid and fully electric vehicle systems

• A/C Systems (R134A & R1234YF)

• Hydraulic and electrical systems

• Electrical and wiring systems

• Practices, methods, and tools used in acetylene and arc welding

• Safety requirements and specifications of various types of vehicles and equipment

• Methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in fleet maintenance and repair

SKILLED IN:

• Using hand and machine tools, including but not limited to electronic testing equipment

• Analyzing, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical problems

• Gaining sensitive information about accidents/damage without alienating the driver/operator

ABILITY TO:

• Write legibly, maintain records and complete reports

• Locate and correct mechanical defects using proper tools, parts or equipment for specific repair problems

• Acquire knowledge of the operating details, procedures, specialized equipment and other characteristics of specified assignment

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education: High school diploma, or equivalent, supplemented by two (2) years post high school training or trade school in the mechanical maintenance and repairs; and

Experience: Three (3) years of experience as a journey level mechanic with knowledge and experience with a diversified fleet of heavy gasoline and diesel equipment and vehicles and the use of state-of-the-art testing and OEM service and repair equipment.

Or: In place of the above requirements, the incumbent may possess any combination of relevant education and experience that would demonstrate the individual’s knowledge, skill and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the job. 

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• Valid Washington State Driver's License, or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment

• City forklift safety course and operating certification

• Air Condition Certification

• Automobile Brakes - A5 ASE Certification

• Medium-Heavy Duty Truck Brakes - T4 ASE Certification

• Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N within 6 months of employment

• Valid First Aid/CPR certification within 6 months of employment

• Successful completion of the City's Defensive Driving Course within 6 months of employment

• New employee must successfully pass the City's pre-employment driver's records check and; all employees must maintain an excellent driving record

• New employees must successfully pass the City’s pre-employment substance abuse screening, pre-employment physical agility and back examination

• Must successfully pass a position specific background inquiry

MACHINE, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Standard and specialized hand and power machines, tools and equipment used in mechanical repair and maintenance of the vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to, brake lathe, engine scan tools, arc welding, etc.

Motorized vehicles including but not limited to heavy trucks, dump trucks, loaders, tractors, , vactors, snow plows, and heavy equipment. May also be required to operate or transport City vehicles from site to site several times each day.

May use typical business office machinery and equipment including, but not limited to, personal computer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, and calculator.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is regularly performed in a garage-type environment while repairing automobiles, construction, and other maintenance equipment, and occasionally in an office environment to complete necessary repair and maintenance logs and other paperwork.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to very loud. Incumbent may be exposed to individuals who are disgruntled, irate, or hostile.
