Lifeguard

(Up to 20 positions available)

Opens: January 6, 2023

Closes: Open until filled

Hours: Varies, up to 40 hours per week from mid-June through Labor Day

Hourly Rate: $20-25, depending on experience


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of an assigned Beach Manager, the Lifeguard assists in providing a safe environment for patrons of a specific recreational area; oversees public activities; safeguards patrons; maintains order; acts in the event of an emergency and administers first aid when necessary; works as part of a team with other lifeguards; participates in the in-service training program; maintains records as assigned; attends all beach staff meetings; maintains equipment and grounds; uses corrective lenses if needed to maintain 20/20 vision when on duty; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Current American Red Cross (ARC) Advanced Lifesaving or Lifeguard Training Certificate required; American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate required; American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certificate required; American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogens Certificate is highly desirable; and Northwest Lifeguard Test Certificate highly desirable. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age; must be able to demonstrate strong communication skills and mature judgment and be in good physical condition.  All lifeguards will be subject to mandatory pre-employment drug testing. Applicants are subject to position-relevant criminal background check.

While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; and talk and hear.  The incumbent is frequently required to sit for extended periods of time.  The incumbent is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  The incumbent must occasionally life and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a field environment; may be exposed to individuals who are difficult. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Subject to irregular work schedules including weekday, weekend, and evening.

Temporary employees with the City of Kent do not receive insurance or time off benefits outside of those which are legally mandated. In certain instances, temporary employees may be eligible for retirement benefits through the State of Washington's Department of Retirement Systems.
