$18.00 per hour

HOURS: up to 15-20 hours per week, flexible scheduling permitted

The Parks Engagement Intern will be involved in park planning and engagement projects, and duties will include planning, development, and implementation of engagement plans for park planning projects that align with Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department goals and objectives. Under direct supervision of Parks staff, intern will be primarily responsible for the preparations of and attendance at planned engagement activities through the park system, assisting planning in conducting and tracking engagement with community members during stated events.


  • Outgoing and/or comfortable having conversations with new people and enjoys attending large community events.

  • Comfortable interacting with a diverse range of community members.

  • Experience working with English Second Language Learners. 

  • Clear written and spoken communication skills.

  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the public, and others sufficient to exchange or convey information.

  • Able to commit to the entire internship period and to follow a mutually agreed-upon schedule,

  • Assist the Park Planner with external and internal engagement and communication efforts and help provide public, government and media relations to promote engagement activities

  • Ability to pay careful attention to detail

  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, via email, and over the telephone 

  • Ability to work well in a team environment with staff, the public, and consultants


Must have a full range of communication techniques including verbal, written, web, media, and other related technological advances and how to strategically apply them in a municipal environment. Must be public service oriented. Experienced in the operation of a PC in a Windows environment, with specific experience using both word processing and spreadsheet applications. Interest and/or career plans in planning, public engagement, social services, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principals, and/or local government affairs. 


Currently in High school or High school diploma or G.E.D. 


Bachelor’s or pursuing Master’s degree.

Proficient in Spanish, Somali or Russian

Previous community engagement experience.

Must be at least 16 years of age, but no more than one (1) year post-baccalaureate degree.
