Recreation/Aquatics Division

(2 Positions Available)

Closes: Open until filled

Hours: May vary; up to 40 hours per week from mid-June through Labor Day

Hourly Rate: $25.00



  • Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, instructs various levels of swimming including various strokes (e.g., front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly, etc.). Teaches students from grades 4 - 12. Organizes and directs activities for students in order to provide a high level of quality instruction for all swim patrons; Develops swim program according to student's ability and promotes students to higher levels of swimming according to their skills; Provides individual feedback to parents/guardians regarding student’s swimming developments and achievements.

  • Instructs both Stand Up Paddle Board and kayak classes; Completes regular cleaning and tidying of equipment used for swim lessons/water activities to ensure the maintenance of a safe environment for staff and patrons.


  • Water Safety Instructor certification or 3 years of demonstrated ability to teach swim lessons.

  • Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certified or the ability to obtain the certification within one month of employment. American Red Cross Blood Borne Pathogens Certificate is highly desirable.

  • Certifications in Stand Up Paddle Board and Kayaking or the ability to obtain the certification within one month of employment.  

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age; have strong communication skills; demonstrate mature judgment; and be in good physical condition. 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel; and talk and hear.  The employee frequently is required to sit for extended periods of time.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a field/outdoor environment; may be exposed to individuals who are difficult.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.  Subject to irregular work schedules including weekday, weekend, and evening.

Temporary employees with the City of Kent do not receive insurance or time off benefits outside of those which are legally mandated. In certain instances, temporary employees may be eligible for retirement benefits through the State of Washington’s Department of Retirement Systems.
